About me

About me
I was raised by an animal-loving family. Since I was little, I’ve always been surrounded by my parents’ pets. Because I liked animals so much, I’ve even sketched a picture of my house complete with special rooms for all kinds of animals (Mum thought I was going to become an architect when I grew up because of that sketch… sorry, mum!) My love was not just for cats but for all kinds of animals.

There were no ugly ones to me, all of God’s animals were beautiful and special. I was really into naturalists like Dian Fossey, David Attenborough and Steve Irwin.I work as an education coordinator, emcee, tour guide and also animal handler. I go from school to school to educate children about wildlife and there are even times where I go to road shows with animals in tow for photo sessions.

My work involves a lot of running here and there, training animals every evening and always on the look out for interesting ideas for the kids in the education programs. It is tiring, but I feel satisfied when I’m able to impart knowledge on them and seeing the audience applaud at the end of performances makes me really happy.

Everywhere I go, a lot of people will ask, “How’s the tiger? Where’s the snake? Has the elephant eaten? Is the owl sleeping? And where’s the monkey?” Not even one person would ask me how I am!

Abandoned animals

Many visitors come and send all sorts of abandoned animals that they find. There are those which fell from the nest, those with broken legs and wings, those that are ill and also those that wander into traps. But most distressing of all are the ones who send their pets over because they are moving and their new place doesn’t allow pets. They promise to visit but I haven’t seen them since. Would you be willing to do that?

There are also those who rear birds without knowing the proper methods of taking care of them to the extent that the birds end up with overgrown beaks, making them look really ugly. And when the birds are ugly and bald, they’d send the birds here too. They never bother to understand their pets, so why are feathers plucked? Why are animals stressed? Who are the victims? The people or their pets?

Not all places accept animals like that. When the animals are not pleasant to look at, they are kept in cages in separate rooms and only given food until they die. I have often wondered why these animals aren’t kept out front. They can list down the animals’ illnesses or disabilities and the cause of these can be used to educate the public. When I did ask, the person in charge simply said, “No one wants to look at a sick animal”. My, that is sad. But what can I do? I’m in a different department altogether and have no right to voice out my opinions.

Cases of abandoned cats, or dogs beaten to death without reason. Because a favourite shoe was chewed, dogs are sent to animal centres like the SPCA. But when nobody is willing to take these dogs as foster pets, the SPCA has to put them to sleep. There was a time when I saw a kitten at the market, sitting all alone at the side of a drain. It only had one eye. I asked the traders there, and they told me someone had kicked the kitten for trying to steal a fish. Kicked a kitten until it lost an eye? Oh God, why are they so cruel? I was so sad to see the state that kitten was in.

A puppy was forced into a narrow pipe for six days without food or water, only able to bark for help. Every night I wandered around looking for the source of the yelps and when I finally found it, I immediately called the fire brigade. The puppy couldn’t even walk, all cold and hungry. I took care of it for two weeks. Brought it to the vet, gave it vitamins until it was healthy and it finally found a new owner after I posted flyers all around the neighbourhood.

I will always swear to help and protect animals in need to the best of my ability. Let all my neighbours say that my house looks like a zoo as long as I’m content. From tortoises, mice, cats, birds even bats would be cared for until they were well enough to fend for themselves.

QIQI

I met a young monkey behind my workplace, stretched out weak without any food and toes and with torn fingers so bad, from an attack by an adult monkey, that you could see the bones. Flies started to surround it, and what was sad was that there so many people around but nobody tried to help. Hang on, don’t I work in an animal park? We have experts who can help, but why didn’t anybody do that?

I decided to take it to an external vet. I called it QiQi. Even though he was getting healthier, the bad condition of his legs forced him to be on his back most of the time. Many people told me to put QiQi to sleep. I did think about it because I felt for QiQi. But when I think back, QiQi, even though it couldn’t stand was always happy with me. It’s been a year now that I’ve been taking care of QiQi, and everytime I hold it in my arms, it would always pretend to talk and even enjoys falling asleep in my embrace.

I even asked for advice from a vet. There was even a doctor from a zoo who offered to help QiQi but until now, there hasn’t been any news about it! Am I asking for too much? They don’t entertain requests like these because it doesn’t serve any benefit to them. You don’t make profit from helping disabled animals. Because of health factors, I now no longer work outside. I only do part-time jobs and work from home. So I have more time to take care and nurse QiQi and other animals.

Qiqi's video

When a pet dies, that special place in our hearts feels so empty...
But we realize, as time passes, that animals have a way of teaching us about loving, about loyalty, joy, and friendship...And whatever weve shared in their presence can never really be lost....

My mission - helping unfortunate animals

Hosted by imgur.com

There are many animals these days who have been disabled and disfigured and in need of shelter. No one will accept an animal that will be a burden to them so I became an individual animal rescuer especially for unfortunate animals. I know many people love animals but can’t afford to take care of them.

Therefore, I need help from all of you. Send in your donations to help these animals and give them a second chance at life. To those who would like to donate items like cages, blankets, towels, food dishes, shampoos and food items can also contact me by e-mail petnanny@hptcmsia.com
